Jakarta Biennale 2013 “SIASAT” 12X36 Disebelah Kecepatan

The Penjaringan area in North Jakarta does not have a lot of public spaces for its residents. Houses in this area are squeezed together, while much of the land has been turned into highways since the late 2000’s. The people of the area are forced to make do with whatever little room is left. For example, the underside of the highway is now used for all sorts of activities, from truck parking, to trash disposal, to a billiard arena for its residents.

TROTOARt group, living in Penjaringan, observes that there is one opportunity that can be developed underneath the highways in Penjaringan: futsal courts as a sports facility for the people. This social project involved Jatiwangi Art Factory (JAF), a cultural organisation from Majalengka. They surrounded the futsal courts with bamboo fences, so that people can play without worrying that the ball will fly onto the streets. JAF also helped developed Bangunin Sahur; TROTOARt’s documentation video about the habit of locals to wake people up for Ramadan dawn meal with various musical instruments. This ritual usually starts with a group of people waking people up in one corner of Penjaringan. From other corners we see other groups appearing doing the same. When these groups converge, they become a big group entertaining people at the dawn meal. The premiere of Bangunin Sahur became the highlight at the inauguration of the futsal field, where people from different backgrounds came together, diverse in the togetherness they have fostered.

TROTOARt was established in 2001 by painters at Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan of Kota Tua (the Old City). Along the way, TROTOARt collaborated with many communities engaging in various artistic endeavors. This project marks the beginning of their collaboration with the cultural organisation Jatiwangi Art Factory that was established in Jatiwangi, West Java, in 2005. This cultural organisation focuses on rural cultural studies of the local area through various art and cultural activities.

Jakarta Biennale 2015 “Maju Kena, Mundur Kena: Acting in The Present”

For this year Jakarta Biennale, i was appointed by Asep Topan, one of the young curators team, to do a mural project together with 5 others female artist from Jakarta ( Sanchia Hamidjaja, Sari Sartje, Nur Hasna, Ayash) and Aceh (Cut Putri). Each of us were placed in certain area in Jakarta, which i think, maybe the toughest part of Jakarta.

I was placed at TK (kindergarten) Gelora Bangsa, Jakarta Utara, Kampung Baru, Penjaringan. 39 km away from my home. This was actually the first time i visited this place. I was introduced by the local independent community called Trotoart under the management of Jhoni Karlah, which also had a close relationship with Ruangrupa, and they had been running their show for quite a long time and their objects were to build a positive environment for the people of Penjaringan through art. Jhoni Karlah is an artist himself. I began to visit Trotoart, for location checking, discussion, and also as a part of Jakarta Biennale an Trotoart’s Kampung Kepang project, i hosted a workshop with the mothers of Penjaringan on making a necklace with my accessories and their braid combined.

The reasons i do this workshop is, first, Jhoni asked me, because its commonly Trotoart asked artist to contribute something to the people here, they also had a weekly program called KBM (Kelas Belajar Mengajar) for the children of Penjaringan and always had an open slots for teachers, students, artists or anyone to contribute on teaching the children of KBM. But for this opportunity, i proposed to do the workshops with the mothers instead. Second, in a search for inspiration, i need to know this area a little bit better, the mothers, the children, the condition of their living, because this is a new environment for me, i dont know their problems, their story.

After a while and with the limited time i had, i think i’ve know Penjaringan a little bit. Problems in Penjaringan that i know so far are crimes, drugs, prostitution, sanitation, unemployment and homelessness. Many families living under the bridge, kids at 1 AM still running around the streets because their parents are away, the mother is a prostitute, and the father are PREMAN or a local thug. Never had imagined how tough living in Penjaringan. 🙁

With stories from Mba Rina (she’s the owner and also a teacher at TK Gelora Bangsa, and Jhoni’s wife), i learned that many of the children here never finished their school and just stop wanting to finished it. Economic factor, where at young age, they had to work to support the family’s living, and the secondly, they just dont want to go to school, they just dont feel inspired to it.

Then for this work, i dedicated the mural for the children but not forgetting the parents, for they had the biggest part on their childrens life. Its about hopes and dreams, and how parents can help their children on achieving it. Parents can keep their hopes high and keep them inspired.
